Digital SLRs (DSLRs) are the camera choice of photography professionals and advanced amateurs. Even beginning photographers who are serious about getting the best pictures possible invest in DSLRs. Digital SLRs consist of two parts - the camera body and the lens. What makes DSLRs so flexible is that the lenses can be interchanged to accommodate the subject you are shooting. When purchasing a Digital SLR be sure to check whether you are buying the body only, or the full "kit". The full kit includes the camera body and the lens. If you buy a body only then you will not be able to take any pictures until you purchase a lens.
If you are interested in a DSLR, it might be a good idea to drop into your local electronics store and play around with a few before buying online. This will help you to better gauge the weight (they can get heavy with large lenses!) and the grip. This is very important since you will need to hold the camera securely to take pictures.
